Webelos Woods is a weekend camping trip for Webelos I and II Cub Scouts (4th and 5th graders). Held every October, Webelos Woods is a right of passage for our older Cub Scouts, and for many it’s the first time they have ever camped outside in a tent. It’s frequently the first time many of the parents have camped out in a tent too. But don’t worry. There is a lot of expertise on hand at all times. It’s a great adventure!
For many years, a friendly family that has a large farm south of Annapolis has hosted this event on their property. It’s a beautiful farm, with rolling hills, crops, barns, a large pond, and some good ghost stories to keep the boys guessing at night. Webelos Woods is run by the Capitol District, and, as such, includes Webelos from all over the greater Anne Arundel county area.
It’s also well orchestrated. Attendees arrive on Friday evening and set up their tents in groups, based on which pack they belong to. The key on Friday is to get your tent pitched before it gets too dark to see.
On Saturday, boys from Pack 731 travel together from event to event, learning scout skills, playing games, watching demonstrations, canoeing, cooking outdoors, attending an evening campfire ceremony, and, eventually, sleeping under the stars in a tent in the field. Each year there are slightly different activities, but every year is great fun.
Note: Everything is outdoors. There is no indoors. So the key to keeping Webelos Woods fun is being prepared, and keeping warm. It’s a LOT colder in late October than you think. Bring gloves, a hat, a winter coat, and spare shoes. For your boy too. You can leave it all in the car if we have an Indian summer this year, but in years past I know I have been thankful for every layer.
Boys are required to come with an adult guardian.
It’s a phenomenal experience. You won’t want to miss it.
